2024 Nostalgia Rides

What better way to learn about transit history than to experience it firsthand? Throughout the year, the Transit Museum offers opportunities to ride our beloved vintage fleet of trains to destinations all over the city. See our trains up close and experience them the way they were intended—in operation on the rails. Sit on the seats, hold onto the straps and handrails, read the vintage advertisements, and travel through time. New York Transit Museum Nostalgia Rides transport straphangers to another age, using the same equipment that city dwellers rode more than a century ago.

On October 27, 1904, New York’s first underground rapid transit system opened to the public to much fanfare and anticipation. The initial route, operated by the newly formed Interborough Rapid Transit Company, traveled 9.1 miles through 28 stations. Both a feat of engineering prowess and innovative design, the subway had an undeniable impact on the city’s trajectory.

Help us celebrate the 120th Subway Day with a train ride on our vintage Lo-Vs travelling along portions of the original IRT route. The train will start at Old South Ferry station, travel north on the 1/2/3 line towards the Bronx and then down the Lexington Avenue line. It will conclude by looping through Old City Hall Station and ending at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station.

There won’t be an opportunity to disembark; this will be a round-trip ride.
