Nostalgia Ride: Redbirds and Bluebirds Take Flight
Saturday, November 4th, 2023
Morning Ride: 10:00 AM
From 1959 to 2003, nine types of subway cars, later collectively known as "Redbirds", became synonymous with the New York City Subway. In 1963, one of these car types, the R-33S (or R-33WF) entered service on the IRT Flushing Line (the 7 train) sporting a blue and white livery that earned them the name "Bluebirds” to encourage a visit to the World’s Fair in Queens.
To mark 20 years since the Redbird’s retirement and 60 years since the Bluebirds entered service, this train made up of both car types will take a celebratory round-trip ride starting and ending at the historic Old South Ferry station. Before the vintage train ride, take photos of the train on the platform and check out details like original mosaics and terracotta artwork from this 1905 station, closed to the public since 2017. The 90-100-minute ride will go up the 4/5/6 line to the 2/5 line in the Bronx. The train will then turn around in the 239th Street Yard and Maintenance Shop for a special behind-the-scenes view before heading back downtown to Old South Ferry station.
There won’t be an opportunity to disembark in the Bronx; this will be a round trip ride.
