Navigating New York — Gallery Talk

-

New York’s transportation history happened in phases, from early ships, trains and passenger ferries to more modern subways, trains, buses and cars. Transportation maps highlight the story of New York’s growth through the increasingly connected transportation system. Indeed, mass transit helped make the greater New York region what it is today.
Join Curator Kathleen Hulser and Research Archivist Rebecca Haggerty for a gallery talk of Navigating New York, which draws on the New York Transit Museum’s collection, artistic renderings, historic maps, guidebooks and digital technology that refresh our view of the city and show how transportation has catalyzed its development.

Subway Therapy: An Evening Discussion with Matthew “Levee” Chavez

-

In New York City, there are certain moments when current events cause us to come together as a community to share and express ourselves. This was demonstrated when Matthew “Levee” Chavez launched “Subway Therapy” at the 14th Street–Union Square station. Originally conceived as a one-on-one conversation between artist and subway riders, the project blossomed and changed forms when Chavez provided sticky notes for strangers to use to express their feelings about the presidential election of 2016. This interactive installation encouraged New York’s commuters to share their thoughts freely, regardless of politics, creating dialogue and connection in one of the places familiar to all city dwellers: the subway
Join us for an evening discussion with Matthew Chavez who will talk about his process and what he has learned by engaging with thousands of people around the world through a project that began in the New York City subway system.
