Jewel in the Crown: Old City Hall Station

With exclusive access through the New York Transit Museum, explore the elegant chandeliers, leaded skylights, vaulted tile ceiling, and graceful curves of this decommissioned subway station. The tour begins above ground, where you will learn the fascinating history of the Beach Pneumatic Tube and the development of City Hall. Then, head downstairs and be transported back to 1904, a time when the Subway’s opening and the completion of this station marked a moment of great civic pride.

Opened over 60 years ago to service 122 trolley coaches (trackless trolleys) and renovated when trolley coach service ended in Brooklyn in 1960, the building was redesigned to service trucks and other work vehicles and to house the Sign Shop, Tin Shop, and Carpentry Shop.

Ride our 1910s BMT B-Type Standards and 1920s BMT D-Type Triplex cars (or IND R1-9 cars) for a two-hour jaunt to Coney Island. Historical objects help us learn about the past, and link us to the present and the future. At the New York Transit Museum, archivists, curators, and educators acquire artifacts of all sizes, from vintage buses to individual subway tokens, to help tell the ever-evolving story of mass transportation and its role in the development of New York City and the surrounding metropolitan region.
