Social Media Policy

The New York Transit Museum (“the Museum”) is committed to maintaining its social media pages as open, educational, and respectful public spaces. These platforms support dialogue about transit history, programs, and related topics. This Social Media Policy explains our expectations for community interaction and how we manage engagement on our social media channels.

Acceptable Use and Behavior

The Museum encourages its online community to engage in meaningful and constructive dialogue. Participants are expected to:

  • Keep comments and posts relevant to the subject matter being discussed.
  • Read and engage with others in a thoughtful and open-minded manner.
  • Engage in respectful debate, challenging ideas without attacking individuals.
  • Uphold factual accuracy where applicable and recognize that historical topics may be subject to ongoing discussion.

Failure to follow these standards may result in comments being hidden, deleted, or reported, and in some cases may lead to account restrictions or blocks.

Prohibited Content

The Museum does not permit the following content on our social media pages:

  • Threats of physical harm to Museum property or collections, or to MTA property.
  • Threats to the safety or dignity of any individual.
  • Harassment, abuse, or trolling of Museum staff or MTA employees.
  • Excessive profanity or obscene language (as determined by moderators).
  • Pornographic images, language, or references.
  • Hate speech, including that targeting race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, age, education level, or physical ability.
  • Promotion and/or sale of services or products, including spam messages and phishing.
  • Repetitive automated contact, such as by using technical tools like bots or scripts.
  • Malware, viruses, or other programs that could damage our computer systems.
  • Anything that infringes on intellectual property rights or other legal rights.

Posts that violate these guidelines will be removed as soon as moderators become aware of them. To report inappropriate content, you may send a direct message to our social media account or contact [email protected].

Moderation Practices

The Museum’s social media moderators monitor conversations to maintain a civil and educational environment. Please note:

  • Moderators check platforms at different intervals and may not immediately respond to every comment or question.
  • The Museum is not responsible for discussions that occur on accounts or pages not operated by the Museum.
  • Each social media platform has its own terms of use; the Museum is not responsible for enforcement of these external rules.

The Museum reserves the right to remove comments or posts at its discretion.

Reporting and Enforcement

If you encounter a post or comment that appears to violate these guidelines, you can alert a moderator by:

  • Sending a direct message on the social platform where the content appears.
  • Emailing [email protected].

Enforcement actions may include:

  • Hiding or deleting comments.
  • Restricting or blocking accounts.
Community Engagement Guidelines

The Museum supports a robust digital community. We encourage the following:

  • Asking questions of fellow community members and Museum representatives.
  • Sharing original research and insights related to transit history and Museum programs.
  • Learning from ongoing conversations, including acknowledging mistakes, asking for clarification, or offering apologies when appropriate.
Additional Considerations

By participating in the Museum’s social media channels, users acknowledge and agree that:

  • The Museum may engage directly in conversations on these platforms.
  • User interactions are also subject to the independent terms and conditions of each platform.
  • The Museum is not liable for the conduct of third parties or the rules of the social media services themselves.
