The New York City transit system plays a leading role in the lives of millions of commuters every day, but it also has a side career on the big screen. From background set dressing to center stage roles, the subway has appeared in numerous Hollywood productions since the silent era. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Inside Llewyn Davis, and A Different Man all filmed scenes at the Transit Museum.
In this program, historian Cosmo Bjorkenheim will explore the many portrayals of the New York City subway on screen, revealing the history of the transit system’s role in the popular imagination.
