The stations at 34th Street-Herald Square and 42nd Street-Bryant Park were two of New York’s most complicated stations to construct because each had to be threaded above and below existing rail tunnels. Originally built as a part of the Independent (IND)’s Sixth Avenue Line that opened in 1940, both 34th and 42nd Street stations faced exceptional challenges as transportation hubs with multiple interconnecting lines, tunnels, and levels.

 

Transit expert Andrew Sparberg will lead a virtual visit of these stations and provide an in-depth examination of their uniquely complex construction histories.
