The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) cuddly Cardvaark was invented for a campaign encouraging riders to trade in their tokens for MetroCards. Even though the campaign never launched, the Cardvaark earned a fanbase among some transit enthusiasts. What makes a good mascot—and does transit need one? Public Programs Assistant Manager Hilary Goldstein discusses the weird and whimsical world of transit mascots and the various roles they’ve played in connecting riders with their systems.
