While mass transit systems move passengers from point A to point B, their designs are rarely that straightforward. Subway tracks could be built on a former railroad line, trolley routes are often paved over, and abandoned projects might be forgotten or repurposed decades later.
Using archival research and vintage aesthetics, cartographer and artist Jake Berman provides a visual exploration of the transit history in the US and Canada in his new book, The Lost Subways of North America: A Cartographic Guide to the Past, Present, and What Might Have Been. His collection of maps and essays examines routes of old train networks, ill-fated plans for a New York steam-powered subway, forgotten streetcar lines, and highlights of current rail systems.
To celebrate the launch of the book, join Berman live at the Museum in conversation with Transit Museum Director Concetta Bencivenga. Order the book at our New York Transit Museum Store online or purchase a copy at the event.
Explore the Museum before the program begins! Doors open for registered guests at 5:30pm.
