The 1 train’s trek from 96th St. to 242nd St. offers a unique ride through a remarkably varied topography, ranging from high mountain peaks to low valleys. With a path that also traverses bridges, tunnels, and a high viaduct, this stretch required a variety of innovative construction techniques. The line features tracks that are elevated above street level and travel deep underground, and includes some of the system’s grandest stations, designed by architects Heins and LaFarge, adherents of the City Beautiful movement.

Join Transit historian Andy Sparberg for an in-depth tour of this upper stretch of the 1 train route, making multiple stops between 96th and 242nd streets to discuss unusual station layouts, histories, and notable design features.

While anyone is welcome to join, this tour provides a deep dive for those who have some background information and knowledge about New York City Transit.
