Explore the rich history of New York City, past and present, one neighborhood at a time. Through the lens of transportation, discover new places, share stories, and connect with communities. Join us on a walking tour of Gowanus, a unique and historic area in northwest Brooklyn that has seen its share of transformation. In fact, this former industrial zone continues to change as defunct factories are razed or repurposed, new high rises are built, and its canal is revitalized. Transit has also evolved over time, from ferries and street trollies to elevated tracks crossing the Gowanus Canal.

This tour will highlight a number of unique transit sites including the Smith-9th Street station, one of the highest subway stations in the world, and the Carroll Street Bridge, the country’s oldest surviving “retractile” bridge. We’ll also get an exclusive tour of the new art center, Powerhouse Arts, the former Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company’s central power station that once energized Brooklyn’s trolley service and the 4th Avenue Subway Line.

Members enjoy early access! Tickets go on sale to Museum members on Thursday, August 3rd at 10am ET. Remaining tickets go on sale to the public at 10am ET on Friday, August 4th.

$40 – General Public / $35 – Museum Members
