The 8th and 6th Avenue subways of the IND (the Independent Subway System) opened in Manhattan in 1932 and 1940, respectively. Running parallel to the earlier IRT West Side route which opened in 1904 as a part of the first subway line, the lines share familiar IRT characteristics, like four-track routes with express service in the middle tracks. But the IND builders also learned from earlier subway design limitations, and set out to improve service with higher speeds, more modern and spacious stations, and upgraded track junctions.

Join transit historian Andy Sparberg for an in-depth tour of this IND route, traveling from 42nd St. station up to 190th and back with multiple stops. Along the way you’ll visit unusual stations while learning how the IND builders addressed unique construction challenges with innovative solutions.

While anyone is welcome to join, this tour provides a deep dive for those who have some background information and knowledge about New York City Transit.

Members enjoy early access! Tickets go on sale to Museum members on Thursday, August 3rd at 10am ET. Remaining tickets go on sale to the public at 10am ET on Friday, August 4th.
