In the 1930s, the Independent Subway System (IND) built a new line along Sixth Avenue— one of the most complicated construction projects in New York transit history. Two large station complexes along the route, 34th Street-Herald Square and 42nd Street-Bryant Park, required engineers to thread new tracks between established Brooklyn Manhattan Transit (BMT) and Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) tunnels, as well as the nearby PATH train.

Transit historian Andrew Sparberg will explain the unique construction of these multi-level and interconnected hubs, taking you to both stations and the recently reconstructed 42nd Street Shuttle. In addition to the cost of the tour, one MetroCard swipe or OMNY tap is required.

As always everyone is welcome to join. This tour provides a deep dive, thus is best suited for those who have some knowledge of New York City transit.

Members enjoy early access! Tickets go on sale to Museum members on Wednesday, January 15th at 10am ET. Remaining tickets go on sale to the public at Friday, January 17th at 10am ET.
