FOR KIDS

BIRTHDAY EXPERIENCE

Celebrate your child’s next birthday at the New York Transit Museum, the “perfect place to throw your kid’s bash,” according to Time Out New York Kids.

Recommended for ages 7-12, this unforgettable birthday party experience takes place in our historic subway station-turned-museum.

Young transportation enthusiasts will embark on an immersive, interactive adventure to help a stranded time traveler repair their time machine. To succeed, partygoers must solve a series of challenges and puzzles hidden in our vintage train cars.

Guided by experienced and engaging facilitators, participants will explore a real decommissioned subway station and discover over 100 years of transit history brought vividly to life!

Please Note: Food, drinks, decorations, and birthday cake are not allowed inside the Museum. See below for recommended alternative locations.

What age do you recommend for birthday experiences?

We feel that 7-12 is the best age range for the Birthday Experience. The party will have a limit on adults in attendance and will involve solving puzzles and challenges while moving through our space. We will make adjustments to the difficulty level of the challenges for different ages to ensure a positive experience for all attendees. At this time, we are not able to accept requests for parties for children under 7.

How many children can attend?

We can accommodate a maximum of 25 children.

How many adults can attend?

We require a minimum of 2 adult chaperones up to a maximum of 8 adult chaperones to stay with the group at all times to assist with moving the group safely through the space. We request that all other parents and guardians drop their children off and return as we will not have space to accommodate parents and guardians of every child. The experience will require moving through the museum for 75 minutes with brief moments of seating.

What are the expectations of the adult chaperones during the birthday experience?

Adult chaperones are there to help the group move safely through the space, keep the group together, and reinforce good and safe behavior in our space which is both a museum and a working subway station with an electrified third rail. Adult chaperones are welcome to participate in the experience, but we ask that they do so while assisting with group management.

What should I advise parents who drop off their children but want to stay in the museum?

They are welcome to purchase a ticket for admission and enjoy our exhibitions on their own.

How long is the birthday experience?

The experience will last for approximately 75 minutes including the checking in process. At the conclusion of the experience partygoers will be asked to exit the museum. The parents or guardians of the birthday child will be responsible for ensuring all children are reunited with the correct parent or guardian and leave the premises. The host parent cannot leave until all children have been picked up. The museum staff cannot assume responsibility for a child whose parent or guardian arrives after the pickup time.

Is there space to wait if partygoers arrive early?

Waiting space is limited and we cannot guarantee waiting space for participants who arrive more than 15 minutes before the start time of the experience. Please keep additional people and items to a minimum.

Will there be space for food?

No, there is no space for food during the Birthday Experience and there is no eating or drinking in the museum. Please see this list of nearby restaurants and spaces for food and cake we recommend.

Will you provide special decorations?

Yes! There will be some customized special decorations in our train car at the end point of the experience. We ask that you not bring additional decorations as we cannot ensure we will be able to use them in our vintage train cars. Ballons are not allowed in the museum.

Is there a coat check or place to leave belongings during the experience?

Yes, there will be a place to leave belongings during the experience. We do advise leaving valuables at home as the storage for belongings will be in a secure but public space. While a few of our exhibits on the mezzanine have air conditioning and heat, a majority of the Museum (including the entire platform level with our historic trains), does not have climate control.

What should I do if I need to reschedule?

Email [email protected]. If unforeseen circumstances require that your party be moved, your non-refundable deposit can be applied toward rebooking on a future available date for up to a year from the original date. Parties rescheduling with less than three weeks’ notice are subject to a $100 rebooking fee. Availability to reschedule is not guaranteed. $100 rebooking fee is waived if weather conditions lead to New York City imposed road closures, MTA imposed transit stoppage, or closure of the Transit Museum.

What should I do if I need to cancel, and I am not interested in rescheduling?

Cancellations by emailing [email protected]. If you are not rescheduling a full refund is available with three weeks notice. A 50% refund is available with notice between 2-3 weeks. There will be no refund when given less than two weeks notice.
