As one of the most critical pieces of subway infrastructure, signals control the safe passage of trains. New York City subway’s original signal system is a fixed block system- meaning that track segments are divided and delineated on each end by different types of signals indicating train positions to operators and dispatchers. Some parts of the subway have a newer, modern type of signaling called Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) a moving block system.

The New York City Transit (NYCT) Signal Training School trains Signal Maintainers on these intricate signal systems in operation today. Now is your chance to enroll! Join the NYCT Signal Operations Training Team for a quick lesson on signal basics and a new perspective on how the city’s subways safely move.
