Alternate Geography – Exploring Subway Infrastructure
Thursday, December 15, 2022

2:00 PM ET

Rather than viewing the subway as a space we pass through to get from point A to point B, what if we view it as an integral part of our social fabric? Edward Hsu is an architect and artist who invites us to reconsider the relationships between communities and the built environment through his work.

In his presentation of Alternate Geography, Hsu will lead us through the unique physical landscape and history that make up the neighborhood of Washington Heights in upper Manhattan. Using archival records, interviews, documentary photography, and 3D modeling, his talk will visualize underground transit networks through unconventional lenses. He will examine the ways communities perceive the role of transport infrastructure in the neighborhood and the city at large.

Edward Hsu (he/him) is an architect and artist whose work in drawing, photography, mapping, text, and research explores symbiotic relationships between communities and the built environment. Drawn to unassuming spaces and underlying structures in the city, he seeks out new mediums to examine their make-up and reflect on their perceptions in the public imaginary. His work and publications have been presented at The Center for Canadian Architecture, Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, The Illini Gallery, and Yale School of Architecture. Through generous grant funding, his work has been sponsored by the Architecture League, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and The New York State Council on the Arts.
