Underworld Tales: A Transit Museum and Morbid Anatomy Variety Show

Join us for a night of storytelling, history, music, and curiosity. The New York Transit Museum is teaming up with Morbid Anatomy for a virtual evening exploring many facets of transit history.

Experience a collection of transit-inspired vignettes and dramatic storytelling – tales of underground excavations, mysterious historical figures, the connections between transit and New York City cemeteries, and forgotten ephemera. Transit-inspired music played on a vintage phonograph will help us travel back in time as we explore images from the Museum’s archive and stories from popular culture.  

Presenters: 

Brooke Bell is an experimental theatre, film and performance artist. She is the artistic director of Virago Stage and Screen and a member of CABORCA. She also works as an Educator and Experience Facilitator for the New York Transit Museum.

WFMU host and Phonograph DJ MAC aka Michael Cumella. As a Phonograph DJ, Cumella created The Antique Phonograph Music Program on WFMU to share the love of acoustic recorded history the way it was originally listened to, on gramophones, victrolas and phonographs.

Marie Fazio is Education Coordinator at the New York Transit Museum where she assists in organizing, planning, and overseeing educational programs. Prior to this role she worked as an Educator, teaching students and adults ages Pre-K through seniors. She has a specific interest in accessibility and co-presented on the topic of virtual accessibility at the 2020 ASTC conference.

Allison C. Meier is a writer on art, culture, and history with bylines including the New York Times, Curbed, CityLab, and National Geographic. She moonlights as a cemetery tour guide

Morbid Anatomy is a Brooklyn-based organization originally created as a blog in 2007 to support a photo exhibition. From there, it expanded into a Museum in Gowanus, Brooklyn, and is now a Library and Gift Shop in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Morbid Anatomy offers lectures, exhibitions, classes, spectacles, symposia, films, and more that explore the overlaps between art, death, medicine and culture.
