KNOW BEFORE YOU VISIT

Curious about transit history? Visit the New York Transit Museum at our historic Court Street station in Brooklyn, our free Grand Central Gallery, or the Shop at 2 Broadway! We recommend booking advance tickets for the Museum in Brooklyn. Groups of nine or more may visit only with a scheduled staff-led adult group tour or school and youth tour.

Please note that the air conditioning in the back mezzanine exhibition spaces and Education Center is currently not working. As a result, no areas of the Museum are climate controlled. Visitors should dress for the weather and bring a fan if possible.

NEW YORK TRANSIT MUSEUM IN BROOKLYN

A one-of-a-kind experience, the New York Transit Museum is housed in a decommissioned subway station at 99 Schermerhorn St in Brooklyn, and is accessible via more than 20 subway and bus lines. The main entrance to the Museum is down two flights of stairs. A wheelchair-accessible entrance is available at the corner of Schermerhorn and Court Streets. A limited number of tickets can be purchased on site, but we strongly encourage advance reservations.

The Museum in Brooklyn is also home to our largest gift shop—packed with perfect transit-inspired treasures to take home.

Please Note: Visitors are encouraged to review our photography and video policy before arriving. Children ages 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Don’t miss our rotating exhibits and retail store inside of the iconic Grand Central Terminal! You’ll find us just off the Main Concourse in the Shuttle Passage, next to the Station Master’s Office. The Main Concourse is wheelchair accessible via Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street entrances, but not from Vanderbilt Avenue

Please note: Strollers are not permitted in the Gallery & Store. Unattended strollers are also not allowed anywhere in Grand Central Terminal, so we recommend leaving strollers at home.

How do I reserve my tickets and what should I know?

All visitors, including members, are strongly encouraged to reserve tickets online in advance.

  • Tickets become available for purchase three weeks in advance of a given date, on a rolling basis.
  • A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase at the Museum each day, on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Please do not arrive more than 5 minutes before your reservation time. You will have a 30 minute window, starting at the time of your reservation, during which you may enter the Museum.
  • Each entrance time has limited capacity to allow for more space to explore the Museum safely and comfortably.
  • You will not be able to re-enter the Museum after you have exited.
  • Tickets must be shown upon arrival and can either be printed in advance or shown on a mobile device.
Are tickets refundable?

Tickets are non-refundable. If you are unable to visit due to illness, you may transfer tickets to a future date as space allows. Please contact us at least 24 hours before your original ticket time if you need to reschedule your visit.

Can groups visit the Museum without a guided tour?

Due to the Museum’s popularity and historic subway station home, we are unable to accommodate unscheduled or self-guided group visits. 

To help keep this unique space safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all visitors, please note the following guidelines when planning your visit: 

  • The New York Transit Museum does not allow self-guided, unguided, or unscheduled  school, youth, and camp groups of any size. These groups will not be admitted without a group tour reservation. Please visit our School & Youth Tours page for details.  
  • The New York Transit Museum does not allow self-guided, unguided, or unscheduled birthday parties of any size. To learn more about our birthday offerings please email [email protected].
  • We strongly encourage Day Habilitation groups to book guided tours, and fee waivers are offered on a first come first served basis to groups of adults with disabilities. Groups of 5 to 12 people (1:5 chaperone to participant ratio required) total can arrange a self-guided visit with at least one week’s notice by emailing [email protected]. Groups larger than 12 must book a guided tour. Any Day Habilitation groups larger than 4 people that arrive without prior communication and confirmation of their visit will be not able to enter the museum.
  • All other adult or senior groups of 9 or more individuals are considered a group and must pre-arrange a tour. These groups will not be admitted without a group tour reservation. Please visit our Adult Tours page to make a reservation.  
  • Individual tickets, whether purchased online or on site, may not be used for self-guided group visits. You cannot complete multiple transactions of online tickets and arrive at the same time or stagger arrival times.  
  • Large groups are prohibited from gathering in one area or exploring the Museum in tandem without a scheduled tour. 

Our goal is for every visitor to have a safe and enjoyable experience while also preserving our beloved subway station and collections. Our staff are here to help make your visit run smoothly, and we appreciate your cooperation with these guidelines.  

If guidelines or staff instructions are not followed, visitors may be asked to leave and tickets will not be refunded. 

Does the Museum accept EBT?

The New York Transit Museum does not accept EBT for free or discounted admission.

If you are a member of your local library, you may be able to check out a Museum membership card through our Library Membership Program. Each card provides free admission for two adults and up to four children. For a list of participating libraries, please visit our Library Membership page.

Does the museum have a bag or coat check?

The Museum does not have a bag or coat check. Please do not bring large bags to the Museum to allow more space for visitors in exhibits. There is an unattended stroller parking area at the back of the Museum.

Is photography allowed?

While photography is allowed during your visit, photoshoots, personal or professional, are not currently permitted at the Transit Museum. Please click here to read our photography/video policy.

Is there a place to eat at the Museum?

Eating is not allowed anywhere in the Museum at this time. Therefore, visitors may not bring in food and there are no lunch tables available for visitor use.

Is there cell phone service or WiFi in the Museum?

There is no cell phone service in the Museum. If you plan to visit with others, we recommend coordinating in advance and entering together. If you would like to use WiFi during your visit, please look for the login information at the admission booth.

Do you have an elevator?

We are an historic site and do not have an elevator. Heavy strollers are best left at home (or be prepared to carry them down multiple flights of stairs), as our accessible entrance is not equipped to safely carry strollers or accept any deliveries.

Is the Museum climate controlled?

While a few of our exhibits on the mezzanine have air conditioning and heat, a majority of the Museum (including the entire platform level with our historic trains), does not have climate control.
