Navigating New York — Gallery Talk

Tuesday, March 26 | 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Transit Museum, Corner of Boerum Place & Schermerhorn Street
Brooklyn, United States
+ Google Map
Free with Museum Admission

New York’s rich visual vernacular is a colorful setting for illustrated stories, so it comes as no surprise that our iconic transportation system plays a starring role in comics and graphic novels. Drawing on satirical cartoons, comic strips and comic books from the 19th through the 21st centuries, Associate Curator Jodi Shapiro will lead a gallery talk of Underground Heroes: New York Transit in Comics, a raucous ride through New York’s transit system from a range of visual storytellers. The exhibit includes such luminaries as Winsor McCay, Will Eisner, Bill Griffith, Roz Chast, Ronald Wimberly and Julia Wertz whose work demonstrates the influence that mass transit has on the stories that are irrevocably woven into the cultural fabric of New York City.

Nostalgia Ride to 161st Street – Yankee Stadium

Thursday, March 28 | 11:00 am - 11:30 am
Grand Central Terminal, 89 E 42nd St
New York, NY 10017 United States
+ Google Map
Free with MetroCard swipe!

We're offering the perfect way to get into the spirit of Bronx Bombers post-season play – a ride to Yankee Stadium aboard our 1917 IRT Lo-V train. If baseball fans swipe their MetroCard right on March 28th, they’ll ride to the stadium in subway-style on our vintage train. The Nostalgia Train, originally operated by the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) system, began service in 1917. The vintage train cars and hundreds of other similar cars served subway customers a few years before the first pitch was thrown at the original Yankee Stadium. With rattan seats, ceiling fans and drop sash windows, the train harkens back to an earlier age of subway travel, and provides a photogenic counterpoint to the new home of the New York Yankees.
