Philip Ashforth Coppola drawing in a subway station as a train goes by behind him.

For four decades, Philip Ashforth Coppola has meticulously documented the New York City subway system in a series of extraordinary drawings, detailing the historic mosaics and ornamental designs found there. His drawings celebrate the power of intense observation and highlight the work of the artists and artisans who built the subway more than a century ago. Now, a new book from Princeton Architectural Press brings together Coppola’s intricate ink drawings with anecdotes he assembled through painstaking research to uncover the history of what is rightly called New York’s largest public art work, its legendary subway system. Join Coppola, co-editors Jeremy Workman and Ezra Bookstein and Senior Curator Amy Hausmann at the Transit Museum to celebrate the launch of One Track Mind: Drawing the New York Subway with a screening of the documentary short of the same name, a conversation, and a book signing.

New York’s rich visual vernacular is a colorful setting for illustrated stories, so it comes as no surprise that our iconic transportation system plays a starring role in comics and graphic novels. Drawing on satirical cartoons, comic strips and comic books from the 19th through the 21st centuries, Associate Curator Jodi Shapiro will lead a gallery talk of Underground Heroes: New York Transit in Comics, a raucous ride through New York’s transit system from a range of visual storytellers. The exhibit includes such luminaries as Winsor McCay, Will Eisner, Bill Griffith, Roz Chast, Ronald Wimberly and Julia Wertz whose work demonstrates the influence that mass transit has on the stories that are irrevocably woven into the cultural fabric of New York City.

Bringing Back the City offers a unique perspective on the vital, often unseen, work of New York’s transit employees. Using the events of 9/11, the 2003 Northeast Blackout, Hurricane Sandy and other severe weather events as examples, the exhibition reveals the critical role that mass transit personnel play in preparing for and responding to natural and man-made disasters. Through a vibrant display of objects, photographs, media, and personal accounts, the exhibition highlights the technical and professional skills needed to restore public transportation service and get New Yorkers moving again after crisis strikes. Join Senior Manager of Exhibits Rob DelBagno for a gallery talk of the exhibit, on view through September 2, 2018.
