On July 26, 1990 the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law to prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities, including in transportation.  The New York Transit Museum and New York City Transit’s Office of Systemwide Accessibility are celebrating the 30th anniversary of this landmark civil rights legislation with two panel events exploring the ADA’s impact on New York City’s public transit system over the years. In each panel, we will use the Museum’s collection to illustrate some of the changes that have been made to improve accessibility throughout the system.

New York City Transit is working to make the subway system more accessible for riders with all types of disabilities.  From elevators and ramps, to new technology and wayfinding innovations, hear more about some of the station upgrades and pilot programs undertaken in recent years for increased accessibility. Join MTA Chief Engineer for MTA Construction & Development Matt Best and New York Transit Museum’s Collections Manager Desiree Alden-Gonzalez for a look at upgrades made in several stations over time.  View historic station photographs from the Museum’s collection and take a deep dive into the important work undertaken to make these stations accessible in recent years.
